Concept introduction: Potential energy diagram describes plots of energy against reaction coordinate. The initial rise in energy until the transition state is equivalent to barrier that must be overcome in order for the reaction to proceed. The energy that must be provided equivalent to this energy gap is termed as activation energy. The various quantitative aspect of this potential energy curve helps to determine the rate of establishment of equilibrium for a certain reaction.
