Chapter 17, Problem 5RQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The definition of the following terms:
1. Alkylating agents
2. Base analogue
3. Nonalkylating agent
4. Intercalating agent
5. Ethidium bromide
Introduction:
The structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) can be significantly altered by the action of chemical xenobiotic compounds. These compounds physically interact and modify the DNA, which results in DNA damage. The mechanisms of action of different xenobiotic compoundsaredifferent and these generally include alkylating agents, base analogues, nonalkylating agents, and intercalating agents.
