Compute the torque that would produce a torsional
shear stress of 50 MPa in a square steel rod 20 mm
on a side.
A 7/8-in diameter bolt, having a diameter at the root of the threads of 0.731
in., is used to fasten two timbers together. The nut is tightened to cause a
tensile stress of 18 ksi in the bolt. Compute the shearing stress (ksi) in the
head of the bolt and in the threads. Also, determine the outside diameter of
the washers (inches) if their inside diameter is 9/8 in. and the bearing stress
is limited to 800 psi.

Question 2
The vertical shaft and the pulleys keyed to it in Figure Q2 may be regarded as weightless. A
constant angular velocity is used to rotate the shaft. The known belt pulls are shown, and the
three pulleys are firmly keyed to the shaft. Calculate the required diameter of a solid circular shaft
if the operating stress in shear is 50 MPa. Because the bearings and pulleys are close together,
neglect shaft bending.
