The poles which are on top side of each magnet.

Expert Solution & Answer

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

A magnet is a material in which domains are aligned in one direction and so, it is able to attract other magnetic materials. A magnet has two poles- a pole is called North pole and another is called South pole.

Dissimilar poles attract each other while similar poles repel.

Glencoe Physics: Principles and Problems, Student Edition, Chapter 24.1, Problem 2PP

The five magnets are floating, it means that each pole facing each other similar.

If the topside of magnet 1 is north pole, then other side would be south pole. This means the topside of second magnet would be south pole and bottom side would be north pole. So, the topside of magnet 3 would be north pole and bottom side would be south pole. Again, top side of magnet 4 would be south pole and bottom side would be north pole. Finally, the top side of magnet 5 would be north pole and bottom side would be south pole.

Conclusion:

Top side of magnet:

1. North pole

2. South pole

3. North pole

4. South pole

5. North pole
