Concept explainers
Whether a magnetic field can alter a particle’s kinetic energy.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A charge put in a magnetic field experiences force. The direction of the force on the charge can be determined by Fleming’s left-hand rule.
The force experienced by the charge is at right angle to the direction of velocity. No work is done on the charged particle as the work done is the dot product of force and displacement, which is the function of cosine. Hence, the kinetic energy will remain unchanged.
Conclusion:
The kinetic energy will remain unchanged.
