Explanation of Solution
As the alkyl chain increase, the solubility will decrease. When ethanoic acid and decanoic acid are compared in their R group, ethanoic acid has a smaller R group as compared to that of decanoic acid. Therefore, ethanoic acid will be more soluble in water than decanoic acid.
This shows that the higher the solubility, the shorter will be the R group. They are polar compounds and they are useful in many processes.
