Fossil fuel can be defined as hydrocarbon-containing compounds made from fossils. There are three main forms of fossil fuel: coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
Explanation of Solution
When marine animals and plants die, they get buried in the ocean bed and mixed with sand, slits, or rocks. Due to intense pressure, heat, and bacteria, these dead plants and animals remain converted to carbon and hydrogen-rich compounds like natural gas and petroleum over a time period of million years.
Similarly, when huge ferns and moss-grown in the swampy tropical region die, they form a thick layer ode decayed vegetation. This is covered with layers of sand and rock which develops high pressure. Due to this pressure and heat inside Earth’s crust, the decayed vegetation converts to coal over millions of years.
