Interpretation: Some examples of products made from natural gas, petroleum, and coal are to be given.
Concept introduction: Fossil fuels have been kept in the earth's crust for millions of years and were generated from the remnants of plants and animals. Fossil fuels are energy sources that include coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
Answer to Problem 38LC
Natural gas produces fertilizer, antifreeze,
Explanation of Solution
Methane, a molecule containing one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms, makes up most of the natural gas. Natural gas is a component in producing fertilizer, antifreeze, polymers, medications, and textiles. It also produces many chemicals, including ammonia, methanol, butane, ethane, propane, and acetic acid.
Kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel, and heating oil are a few examples of the various products that may be derived from petroleum. Petroleum products are complex combinations formed from crude oil with comparable chemical and physical characteristics. They include hundreds of hydrocarbon compounds in variable quantities, as well as other additives.
Coal, one of the most significant fossil fuels, has several uses, including generating heat, igniting industrial generators, and manufacturing cast iron. In addition to producing cement, carbon fibers and foams, pharmaceuticals, tars, and residential and commercial heating, coal has many further applications.
