Interpretation- To determine the characteristics that classify coal.
Concept introduction- Coal is formed by dead or decayed vegetation. When layers of soil and rock cover the dead vegetation, intense pressure develops. The heat and pressure inside the Earth's crust convert the dead vegetation into coal.
Answer to Problem 35LC
The two characters used to classify coal are:
- Hardness
- Carbon content.
Explanation of Solution
The first stage of coal formation is peat which is soft and has high water content. The next stage is lignite which is harder and has high carbon content. The next stage is bituminous which has lesser water content but high carbon content. Bituminous converts to harder coal and higher carbon content anthracite. Hence, coal can be classified based on two characteristics:
- Hardness
- Carbon content
