Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The types of molecules that will have mirror image isomers must be explained.
Concept Introduction :
An unsymmetrical object will look different in mirror. A molecule without any symmetry will have mirror image isomer.
A chiral molecule is the one in which no symmetry elements are present except simple rotation axis of symmetry.
Answer to Problem 2E
A chiral molecule will have mirror image isomer.
Explanation of Solution
Due to absence of symmetry element, a chiral molecule will have a mirror image which is non-superimposable with the original molecule. Thus, the two images will not be identical. So a chiral molecule (unsymmetrical molecule) will have mirror-image isomer.
A chiral molecule will have mirror-image isomer.
