Molecular formulas are related with smell because it shows the type of atoms present in the molecule. The chemical formula helps to determine the functional groups in the molecule.

Different functional groups have different smells. For example: ester has a fruity smell, carboxylic acid has a putrid smell, ketone has minty smell and amines have fishy smell.

Thus, from the chemical formula by determining the functional groups, smell of the molecule can be identified.
