Explanation of Solution
Red-eye is the wild type phenotype. Purple color and sepia eye color also exist, but are recessive to the red eye color. Flies with purple eyes were crossed with sepia eyed individuals. This cross yielded
This approximately equals to

All the individuals in the F1 generation will be pr+prsep+sep. Both genes are present in dominant heterozygous condition thus, the color of the eye will be red.
The F1 offspring are mated with each other in the following cross:

This type ofpattern of inheritance is known as the complement system. The protein product of both pr+ and sep+genesis needed for red coloring, but if one of them is absent, the phenotype changes. The individual having homozygous alleles for purple will have purple eyes and the individual having the homozygous allele for sepia will have sepia eyes. The individual having both the genes in homozygous recessive condition will have purplish sepia eyes.
There isa total of four phenotypes in the F2 generation. A total number of individual in F2 generation is
Proposed Hypothesis: The pattern of inheritance is complementation type and both genes are required to produce red eye coloration in flies. The cross between pr+prsep+sep (red eye) and pr+prsep+sep(red eye) will yield 9:3:3:1 ratio in the F2 generation.
Based on this hypothesis, calculating the expected values of two phenotypes:
Observed phenotype (O) | Expected phenotypes(E) |
444 red eyes | |
146 purple eyes | |
151 sepia eyes | |
50 purplish sepia eyes |
The population data falls into four sets in this question so, the chi-square calculation wouldbe done by the formula:
The values of Observed phenotypes (O) and Expected phenotypes (E) are
Applying the formula for chi-square,
The formula for measuring the degrees of freedom is
Therefore, it can be concluded that the eye color in Drosophila is governed by two genes sep+ and pr+, when both of them are present, the eye color is red. When two red-eyed individuals withpr+prsep+ sep (red eye) and pr+ prsep+ sep (red eye) genotype are crossed together,

Genetics: Analysis and Principles
- Sunflowers with flowers 10 cm in diameter are crossed with a plant that has 20-cm flowers. The F1 plants have flowers 15 cm in diameter. In the F2 generation, 4 flowers are 10 cm in diameter and 4 are 20 cm in diameter. Between these are 5 phenotypic classes with diameters intermediate to those at the extremes. a. Assuming that the alleles that contribute to flower diameter act additively, how many genes control flower size in this strain of sunflowers? b. How much does each additive allele contribute to flower diameter? c. What size flower makes up the largest phenotypic class?arrow_forwardIndividuals of genotype AaBb were mated to individuals of genotype aabb. One thousand offspring were counted, with the following results: 474 Aabb, 480 aaBb, 20 AaBb, and 26 aabb. What type of cross is it? Are these loci linked? What are the two parental classes and the two recombinant classes of offspring? What is the percentage of recombination between these two loci? How many map units apart are they?arrow_forwardHemophilia and color blindness are both recessive conditions caused by genes on the X chromosome. To calculate the recombination frequency between the two genes, you draw a large number of pedigrees that include grandfathers with both hemophilia and color blindness, their daughters (who presumably have one chromosome with two normal alleles and one chromosome with two mutant alleles), and the daughters sons. Analyzing all the pedigrees together shows that 25 grandsons have both color blindness and hemophilia, 24 have neither of the traits, 1 has color blindness only, and 1 has hemophilia only. How many centimorgans (map units) separate the hemophilia locus from the locus for color blindness?arrow_forward
- Coat color in mice is influenced by two genes, one for color (A) and one for the amount of pigment production (C). Mice with the wild type agouti coat color have a yellowish to brownish color. Mice also have a gene that determines the amount of pigment the hair produces. Mouse Coat Phenotype and Genotype Correlation Agouti coat AA, Aa Solid gray/black coat aa Pigment production CC, Cc Albinism cc Multiple crosses were made between male and female mice that were each heterozygous for both traits (AaCc). The phenotypes of the F1 generation were wild-type females, and males with white eyes, and miniature wings. These flies were allowed to mate with each other and produced the following offspring: Red eyes, long wings White eyes, miniature wings Red eyes, miniature wings White eyes, long wings 770 716 401 318 Total 2205 A. Are these genes linked? Why or why not?arrow_forward. In fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), the bn+ allele for normal dull red eyes is dominant to the bn allele that gives brown eyes. Another gene affects wing shape; for this gene, the ct+ allele for normal wings is dominant to the ct allele, which gives “cut” wings, with jagged edges. A fly with dull red eyes and normal wings was crossed with a fly that had dull red eyes and cut wings, and the following progeny were obtained: 16 dull red eyes, normal wings 14 dull red eyes, cut wings 5 brown eyes, normal wings 5 brown eyes, cut wings What were the genotypes of the parents?arrow_forward
- . Consider the imaginary trait, bristles with split-ends, a trait hypothesized to be X-linked dominant. In a cross, the P1 virgin females were homozygous wild type while the males had bristles with split-ends. The F1 84 males were all wild type while the 90 females all had split-ends. In addition, the data for the F2 generation revealed 26 wild type males, 35 wild type females, 29 split-end males and 40 split-end females. Is this what is to be expected? Use chi-square to prove your position.arrow_forwardRed eyes is the wild-type phenotype in Drosophila, and severaldifferent genes (with each gene existing in two or more alleles) affect eye color. One allele causes purple eyes, and a different allelecauses vermilion eyes. The purple and vermilion alleles are recessive to red eye color. Two types of crosses provided thefollowing data:Cross 1: Males with vermilion eyes × females with purple eyes354 offspring, all with red eyesCross 2: Males with purple eyes × females with vermilion eyes212 male offspring with vermilion eyes221 female offspring with red eyesExplain the pattern of inheritance based on these results. Whatadditional crosses might you make to confirm your hypothesis?arrow_forwardIn Drosophila, white eyes (w) are recessive to red eyes (w+) at one locus and black body (b) is recessive to gray body (b+). A homozygous white eyes, gray bodied female is crossed with a homozygous red eyes, black bodied male to produce the F1 progeny. The F1 progeny are testcrossed and produce the following progeny: White eyes, black body: 212 White eyes, gray body: 288 Red eyes, black body: 308 Red eyes, gray body: 192 Does the evidence indicate that w and b loci are linked? Explain why or why not? If they are linked, what is the map distance between the two loci? If they are not linked, what is the map distance between the two loci? If they are linked, are the allels in the F1 in coupling or repulsion? How do you know? Draw the genotypes of all individuals described in the problem (original parents, F1, testcross, and F2 progeny) using the appropriate notation.arrow_forward

One parent strain displays red eyes and curly wings, while the other parent strain displays white eyes and vestigial wings. The resulting F1 generation flies were allowed to self-cross to produce F2 generation. The following data were obtained: F1 generation: all have red eyes and curly wings.
