Chapter 4, Problem 6EQ

The Mic2 gene in humans is present on both the X and Y chromosome. Let’s suppose the Mic2 gene exists in a dominant Mic2 allele, which results in normal surface antigen production, and a recessive mic2 allele, which results in defective surface antigen production. Using molecular techniques, it is possible to distinguish homozygous and heterozygous individuals. By following the transmission of the Mic2 and mic2 alleles in a large human pedigree, would it be possible to distinguish between pseudoautosomal inheritance and autosomal inheritance? Explain your answer.

Several genes in humans in addition to the ABO gene () give rise to recognizable antigens on the surface of the red blood cells. The Rh marker is determined by positive (R) and negative alleles () of gene R, where R is completely dominant to r. The presence of M and N surface proteins are controlled by two codominant alleles of gene L (LM and LM. For each mother-child pair, choose the father of the child from among the males in the right column. (Assume that all mothers and fathers are HH; there is no involvement of the Bombay phenotype.) Paternal genotypes maybe used once, more than once, or not at all. Each mother-child pair matches with one or more than one paternal genotype. Wild-type strains of the haploid fungus Neurospora canmake their own tryptophan. An abnormal allele td renders the fungus incapable of making its own tryptophan. An individual of genotype td grows only when its medium supplies tryptophan. The allele su assorts independently of td; its only known effect is to suppress the tdphenotype. Therefore, strains carrying both td and su donot require tryptophan for growth.a. If a td ; su strain is crossed with a genotypically wildtype strain, what genotypes are expected in the progenyand in what proportions?b. What will be the ratio of tryptophan-dependent totryptophan-independent progeny in the cross of part a?
A female is homozygous for a dominant mutation of ACE2 which prevents binding of the spike protein from Covid-19. This woman marries a man that does not contain any mutation for ACE2. Considering the bar body, what would this mean for chances of their daughters being more protected from Covid-19 in the future. What about the sons? Select one: a. Each daughter would have a 50% chance of being essentially immune to Covid 19 due to mosaicism and inactivation of one X. If the X with the wild-type allele for ACE2 is suppressed as the bar body, the women would be more resistant to COVID-19, if the X with the mutant form is suppressed, the daughter have the normal reaction to COVID-19.  Each son will be immune. b. Since the ACE2 receptor has nothing to do with the sex chromosomes, then each daughter will be heterozygous for the mutation and both the sons and daughters will be immune to COVID-19. c. Since females have two X's, each daughter will be twice as affected by COVID-19.
