Gene transfer is the method by which the foreign gene is inserted into the cell. There are two methods of gene transfer: horizontal gene transfer and vertical gene transfer. Transformation can occur naturally or the genes can be artificially introduced into the host to modify its genome. A special protein complex called transformasome is required in natural gene transfer.
