Concept introduction:
When isomeric molecules have the same molecular formula, but different bonding patterns and atomic organization, they are known as constitutional isomers.
The structural formula of a chemical compound consists of a graphic representation of the molecular structure and arrangement of atoms.
cis–trans Isomers are organic molecules that have double bonds. Attachment of two similar groups to the carbon on the same side is called cis-isomer, and if the attachment is on a different side, it is called trans-isomer.
When carbon is attached to four different groups, it is known as the chiral carbon.

- Glucose, C6H12O6, contains an aldehyde group but exist predominantly in the form of the cyclic hemiacetal show below. A cyclic hemiacetal is formed when the —OH group of one carbon bonds to the carbonyl group of another carbon. Identify which carbon provides the —OH group and which provides the —CHO? Give a functional isomer of glucose and draw its structure.arrow_forwarda. How many structural isomers exist for C4H9OH? b. (i) Write condensed structural formulas, and sketch skeletal structures for each structural isomer of C4H9OH. (ii) How many structural isomer(s) is / are chiral?arrow_forwardDraw and name the five cycloalkane structures of formula C5H10. Can any of these structures give rise to geometric (cis-trans) isomerism? If so, show the cis and trans stereoisomersarrow_forward
- Are there alkene isomers with the molecular formula C2H3Cl?arrow_forwardIs methane chiral?arrow_forwardBranched compounds are said to have weaker intermolecular forces of attraction. Therefore, between pentane, a straight-chained compound and 2-methylbutanol which exhibits branching at carbon 2, the former has stronger IMFA. (hint: look at the structure of the two molecules) True or Falsearrow_forward
- An unknown compound A is known to be an alcohol with themolecular formula C4H10O. When dehydrated, compoundA gave only one alkene product, C4H8, compound B. Compound A could not be oxidized. What are the identitiesof compound A and compound B? Draw structures and explain.arrow_forwardDraw the skeletal (bond-line) structures of all isomers of C4H8O (including configurational isomers) that contain an alkene and an ether. There should be 5 structures.arrow_forwardCompounds A and B are isomers of the molecular formula C9H19Br. Both yield the same alkene C in an elimination reaction. Hydrogenation of C yields the product 2,3,3,4 tetramethyl pentane. What are the structures of A, B, and C?arrow_forward
- Propranolol is a chiral compound. (R)-Propranolol is used as a contraceptive; (S)-propranolol is used to treat hypertension. Identify the chiral carbon in the structure below. Is this the (R) or the (S) isomer? Draw the other isomer.arrow_forwardOne mole of an unknown hydrocarbon, compound C, in the presence of a platinum catalyst, adds 98.9 L of hydrogen, measured at 744 mm Hg and 22 degrees C , to form a saturated alkane which contains one ring. When one mole of compound C is reacted with ozone, followed by reduction with (CH3)2S , four moles of only one product was formed, whose condensed molecular formula is CHO -CHO. Give the structure of compound C. Explain your reasoningarrow_forwardCompounds X and Y both have the formula C7H14. Both X and Y react with one molar equivalent of hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst to form 2-methylhexane. The heat of hydrogenation of X is greater than that of Y. Both X and Y react with HCI to give the same single C₂H₁5Cl compound as the major product. What is the structure of X? • In cases where there is more than one answer, just draw one. 7 0▾ ChemDoodleⓇ 146arrow_forward
