Question
Chapter 24.4, Problem 26LC
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: To describe the behavior of phospholipids in water.
Concept introduction: Phospholipids are a type of amphiphilic molecule which have a hydrophilic end as well as a hydrophobic end.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 26LC
Phospholipids form a double layer, which is known as a lipid bilayer in water.
Explanation of Solution
A phospholipid is a lipid that contains a phosphate group and is the major component of the cell membrane.
The phospholipid molecule consists of a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic tail, as the name suggests the hydrophobic tail is the water-hating site and the hydrophilic head is the water-loving site.
In water, the tail of the hydrophobic end is sandwiched between the two layers of the hydrophilic heads.
