Interpretation: Molecular structures of three main types of lipids are to be compared.
Concept Introduction: Lipids are hydrocarbon-containing molecules that form the basis for the structure and operation of living cells.
There are three main types of lipids- Triglycerides, Phospholipids, and Sterols.
Answer to Problem 23LC
Molecular structures of triglycerides, phospholipids, and sterols are-
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Sterols
Explanation of Solution
Given Information: There are three main types of lipids.
Triglycerides are tri-esters of glycerol that are bounded to 3 fatty acids.
Alcohols have a hydroxyl group (-OH) and organic acids have a carboxyl group (-COOH).
Phospholipids contain 2 hydrophobic tails of fatty acids and 1 hydrophilic head of phosphate moiety (one of two equal parts) that are joined together by an alcohol or a glycerol molecule.
Sterols are multi-ring structures similar to the Chicken wire. Its molecule is derived from a Gonane by the replacement of a Hydrogen atom by a Hydroxyl group in position 3 of the A-ring, it’s an Alcohol of Gonane.
