Summary Introduction
To review:
Definition of the following terminologies:
1) Glycogen
2) Cellulose
3) N-glycan
4) O-glycan
5) Glycosaminoglycan
Introduction:
Polysaccharides or glycans are the long chains of one or more than one type of monosaccharide molecules. Glycans are of two types: homoglycans (containing same monosaccharide chain) and heteroglycans (having varioustypes of monosaccharides in the chain). Homoglycans play a significant role in the structural and functional composition of various species. Heteroglycans have sugars attached to different molecules such as polypeptides via N- linkage or O- linkages.
