Introduction:

Viruses play an important role in the ocean food webs as it returns a significant amount of carbon in the marine system to the atmosphere. At each level of the food web, some amount of the carbon is fixed and the biomass sinks down in the ocean. On the ocean floor, benthic microbes metabolize this biomass. However, they are so slow in this act that most carbon is effectively removed from the carbon cycle.
