The reactive molecules that have an unpaired electron are referred to as free radicals. They have the property to oxidize as well as to reduce different molecules, simultaneously. The free radicals containing oxygen with an unpaired electron are termed as reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mitochondria serve as a significant source of ROS.
