Chapter 15, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The ability of several microbes to fix the free atmospheric nitrogen and the dependency of others on the availability of derivatives of nitrogen. Also, mention the environmental factors influencing each category.
Introduction:
Nitrogen is a vital limiting factor in plant growth and development. It is a major component that is present in chlorophyll and amino acids. Plants cannot use the free atmospheric nitrogen, but can use the reduced forms of nitrogen. There are various microbes in the environment that are associated with the reduction of nitrogen so that it can be utilized by the plants.

Soil microorganisms, collectively referred to as dizotrophs, fix 90% of the inert nitrogen gas to
ammonium and nitrate. There are two-main types of nitrogen-fixing bacteria: free-living (nonsymbiotic)
and mutualistic (symbiotic). Describe the mutualistic relationship between Rhizobium and legumes. What
is the advantage of using legumes as a cover crop in agricultural systems?
A point of interest is that the nitrogenase enzyme complex is highly sensitive to oxygen. This is a major
problem for free-living aerobic species such as cyanobacteria and species of the genera Azotobacter and
Beiigrinckia. Describe two ways the bacteria can overcome to levels of oxygen in their cells.
What are the unique problems associated with Nitrogen fixing organisms in terms of energy production and the need for low O2 tension to protect nitrogenase?
Can you please describe in detail how Azotobacter and Rhizobium species solve these problems. Thank You
What roles do bacteria play in nitrogen fixation, ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification? (Be detailed in this response and be sure to address all four reactions.)

There are many places in the Philippines, which are now contaminated by petrochemical sources, such as petroleum refineries and storage sites, paint manufacturing plants, gasoline service stations, gas emissions, etc. (EMB-DENR, 1997). Although the basic solution to the pollution problem is the elimination of the sources of these pollutants, there are however overriding economic, social and political factors that must be considered. An attractive remedial measure is the use of pesticide-degrading microorganisms for the environmental clean-up.
