Chapter 41, Problem 5IQ
Summary Introduction

To determine: The two types of macromolecules that have been partially digested by the time chime moves into the intestine and where this digestion process occurs, and determine the enzymes involved in it.

Introduction: Digestive system consists of a collection of organs that helps in digestion of food materials and converting them into basic energy rich molecules for supplying it to the entire body. Several organs are involved in the digestive system that start from the mouth and end at the anus. Complex food materials are converted to the simplified and utilizable forms and the leftover waste materials are excreted from the body through a structure called large intestine.

Digestion of proteins in the acidic environment of the stomach is carried out by the enzyme pepsin. A different enzyme, called trypsin, digests proteins in the neutral environment of our small intestine. The amount of each enzyme are the same and the amount of substrate is the same between the stomach and small intestine. Explain why our bodies use two different enzymes to digest proteins in the stomach and the small intestine.
Suppose you have a test tube containing olive oil and pancreatic lipase in a pH 7.0 buffer incubating at 37°C for 1 hour. a) Identify two different observations or measurements you can make in order to determine whether digestion of the oil occurred. b) Do you think digestion occurs under these conditions? What could have made digestion more efficient?
a) What is the general function of all enzymes that are involved in the digestive process.b) Use the Table below to summarise the function of 6 named digestive enzymes that are either secreted from specific regions of the gastrointestinal system, or part of the intestinal brush border.  Enzyme Site of secretion / Action Function (to include substrate and product formed)
