How come the structure labeled as 1 has 8 pi electrons? If the double bond has 2 pi electrons, and you count the lone pairs, wouldn't it have 6 pi electrons?
Why does the structure labeled as 2 has aromaticity? If the pi bond has 2 pi electrons and then you coun the lone pairs, wouldn't it only have 5 pi electrons?

- Regarding the following condensed structures, what are their bond-line structures?arrow_forwardFatty acids are molecules with a carboxylic acid on one end and long hydrocarbon chain on the other. The sodium salts of fatty acids (such as sodium strearate, shown below) are commonly used in soaps to trap nonpolar dirt and grease particles. Soap does not work well in "hard water, which is water with high concentration of magensium and calcium ions (often found in water obtained from wells) Explain this observation at a molecular level.arrow_forwardCarboxylic acid functional groups can be part of the parent chain of a molecule. This means that the carbon atom in the functional group is also part of the main carbon chain. However, carboxylic acid functional groups can also branch off the main chain. The following example contains both types of carboxylic acid functional groups. Draw the structure in bond-line notation. HOOCCH2CH(COOH)CH2COOHarrow_forward
- How would I be able to look at the compound C2H6 and be able to determine what kind of bond there is between the carbon and hydrogen?arrow_forwardDoxorubicin, shown here, is an important chemotherapy drug used to treat avariety of cancers, including bladder cancer, breast cancer, and certain forms of leukemia. Doxorubicin works by binding to DNA in such a way that a portion of it penetrates the DNA double helix— a process called intercalation. During transcription— the process that forms RNA— portions of the DNA strands are temporarily separated for the base sequence to be read and then are reconnected. With bound doxorubicin, however, the double helix does not reform properly after the strands are separated, which disrupts replication— the process that forms an identical copy of DNA. Which portion of doxorubicin do you think intercalates into the DNA double helix, and why do you think it has little difficulty doing so?arrow_forwardDraw all aromatic hydrocarbons that have molecular formula C8H10. For each compound, determine how many isomers of molecular formula C8H9Br would be formed if one H atom on the benzene ring were replaced by a Br atom.arrow_forward

In urea, both nitrogen atoms are found to be planar, with bond angles close to 120°. Explain this surprising finding. (Hint: Consider resonance forms and the overlap needed in them.)arrow_forwardIs 5-hydroxymethylcytosine aromatic? Draw at least one resonance structure to prove your reasoning.arrow_forward
