Chapter 16, Problem 15CONQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether paramutation is a cis-epigenetic or a trans-epigenetic mechanism.

Introduction:

Paramutation is an interaction between two alleles of a gene where, one allele can alter the expression of the other without changing its DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence. The allele that alters the expression is termed as the paramutagenic allele while, the gene whose expression is altered is called the paramutable allele. Paramutations are also inheritable like genetic mutations.

"Tobacco smoking triggers a large number of somaticmutations and epigenetic changes". Define about this ?
What is the key difference between cis- and trans-epigenetic mechanisms for maintaining an epigenetic modification? We considered genomic imprinting of the Igf2 gene, in whichoffspring express the copy of the gene they inherit from their father, but not the copy they inherit from their mother. Is this a cisora trans-epigenetic mechanism?
Describe how epigenetic changes underlie paramutation.
