Interpretation: To determine the effect of surfactant of surface tension on water.
Concept Introduction: Surface tension, which tends to reduce surface area, is the tension of a liquid's surface film driven by the affinity of the particles in the surface layer to the bulk of the liquid.
Answer to Problem 4LC
The surfactant will reduce the surface tension of the water.
Explanation of Solution
Water has a high surface tension due to the strong cohesive interactions between its molecules. Surfactants disrupt these interactions when they absorb. Surface tension would drop because the intermolecular interactions between the water molecules, as well as the surfactant, are substantially smaller than those between two water molecules.
Hence, the surfactant will reduce the surface tension of water.
