Question
Chapter 15, Problem 30RA
Summary Introduction
To review:
The mechanism by which the innate immune system recognizes pathogens and responds to them.
Introduction:
The immune system provides protection against the deleterious effects of various pathogens. The body mainly has two types of immunity, namely innate immunity and acquired immunity. Innate immunity is present since birth and serves as the first line of defense mechanism. Acquired immunity is generated throughout the lifetime of an individual and it is the second line of defense.

Explain how the innate (nonspecific) immune system is able to recognize a wide variety of differentpathogens and respond to them.
Describe how the immune system distinguishes foreign cells from cells deemed as self.
Using complete sentences, compare and contrast the of the innate and adaptive immune systems with the following considerations: What are each system’s functions? Which cells are involved in each? What outcomes occur afteractivation?
