Chapter 8, Problem 127P
A hydraulic press is powered by a remote high-pressure pump. The gage pressure at the pump outlet is 3000 psi, whereas the pressure required for the press is 2750 psi gage, at a flow rate of 0.02 ft3/s. The press and pump are connected by 165 ft of smooth, drawn steel tubing. The fluid is SAE 10W oil at 100°F. Determine the minimum tubing diameter that may be used.

A pump operating at 1750 rpm delivering 500 gpm against a total head of 150 ft. Changes in the
piping system have increased the total head to 360 ft. At what rpm should the pump be operated
to achieve this new head at the same efficiency?
Show complete solution and formulas used. Show the schematic diagram too.
Calculate the required pipe diameter to avoid cavitation, if the pump delivers
Q = 30US gallon/min water from a closed tank, where the pressure (above the
water level) is p = 40kPa. The equivalent length of the smoothened concrete
pipe on the suction side is 12m while the suction flange of the pump is 8m below
the water level. The vapour pressure at the given water temperature is 2.8kPa.
The required net positive suction head is NPSHr = 3.2m.
Water at 90°C is to be pumped from a low-elevation reservoir to a high-elevation reservoir at a
flow rate of 0.0046 cu. meter per second, as shown in the figure below. The atmospheric
pressure at the location of the pump installation is 98.4 kPa. The 40-mm-diameter suction pipe
has a total length of 7.2 m. The friction factor for the suction pipe is estimated to be 0.025. The
centrifugal pump that will be used has an NPSHR of 4.5 m. Will cavitation occur in this pump
setup?
