Chapter 5, Problem 32CONQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
Whether the development of the acute murine leukemia virus resembles maternal inheritance and is not caused by extranuclear inheritance or not.
Introduction:
Extranuclear inheritance is the transmission of genes that occurs outside the nucleus whereas maternal inheritance is a part of extranuclear inheritance, in which the traits of an offspring are that of its mother due to the extranuclear DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) present in the ovum at the time of fertilisation.

Acute murine leukemia virus (AMLV) causes leukemia in mice. This virus is easily passed from mother to offspring through themother’s milk. (Note: Even though newborn offspring acquire thevirus, they may not develop leukemia until much later in life. Testing can determine if an animal carries the virus.) Describe how thedevelopment of leukemia via AMLV resembles a maternal inheritance pattern. How could you determine that this form of leukemiais not caused by extranuclear inheritance?
Pancreatic cancer is clearly inherited as an autosomal dominant trait in the family illustrated in Figure 23.1. Yet most cases of pancreatic cancer are sporadic, appearing as isolated cases in families with no obvious inheritance. How can a trait be strongly inherited in one family and not inherited in another?
A 22-year-old man enters the clinic with a wide-stepping gait, muscle wasting, myotonia, and bilateral cataracts. His father, who is 55, currently
suffers from similar symptoms, which began about 5 years ago. His father's sister also exhibits similar symptoms; hers also began in her 50s. The
patient's mother exhibits none of these symptoms.
What is the inheritance pattern of this patient's most likely disease?

- Hereditary hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that causes the body to absorb too much iron from the diet. This excess iron is stored in the body's tissues and organs, particularly the skin, heart, liver, pancreas, and joints. Because humans cannot increase the excretion of iron, excess iron can overload and eventually damage tissues and organs. A young couple, Bart and Jenny, are expecting a child and are aware there might be a chance that their child could be affected by this disorder. Jenny (the wife) has ichthyosis, but Bart (her husband) is unaffected and completely normal with respect to the allele responsible for this disorder. Both Bart and Jenny were Biology majors as undergraduates. Knowing a little about the pattern of X-linked recessive inheritance, Bart and Jenny were concerned when ultrasound revealed that they would be having a son. However, genetic testing performed on the baby shortly after birth revealed that their newborn son, Mark, did not…arrow_forwardAchondroplasia is a form of dwarfism in humans. It is caused by a mutant allele of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene ( FGFR3) that produces an overactive protein. Having one copy of the mutant allele results in dwarfism. This excess iron is stored in the body's tissues and organs, particularly the skin, heart, liver, pancreas, and joints. Because humans cannot increase the excretion of iron, excess iron can overload and eventually damage tissues and organs. Anthony and Melinda met at a support group for individuals who have hereditary hemochromatosis. They were advised by their genetic counselor that it would be risky to have children, since both of them are homozygous for the same recessive allele that causes this condition. Nevertheless, they decided to have a child together. During Melinda’s pregnancy, amniocentesis and genetic testing were performed, and it was confirmed the fetus was homozygous for the hereditary hemochromatosis allele. At birth, the baby appeared completely normal, and as the child continued to grow and mature, the couple were surprised that he seemed…arrow_forwardMutations in the genes for clotting factor VIII and IX cause hemophilia A and B, respectively. A woman may be heterozygous for mutations in both genes, with a mutated factor VIII allele on one X chromosome, and a mutated factor IX allele on the other. All of her sons should have either hemophilia A or B. However, on rare occasions, one of these women gives birth to a son who does not have hemophilia, and his one X chromosome does not have either mutated allele. Explain.arrow_forwardIn man, muscular dystrophy is a condition in which the muscles waste away during early life and may result in a shorter life expectancy. It is due to a sex-linked, recessive gene. A certain couple has five children – three boys (ages 1yr, 3yrs, and 10yrs old) and two girls (ages 5yrs and 7yrs old). The oldest boy shows the symptoms of this disease. You are their family physician and they come to you for advice. - Another couple is concerned their child will be born with sickle cell anemia. The woman does not have sickle cell anemia. The woman’s mother had sickle cell anemia and her father was a carrier of the sickle cell gene. The man knows that he is not a carrier of the sickle cell gene. What is the probability that the child will be a carrier of sickle cell anemia?arrow_forwardIn a woman who is a carrier of a mutant OTC deficiency allele, her sons who receive the mutant allele will be affected and her daughters will be carriers who may or may not be symptomatic, depending on random X inactivation in the liver. 1) Is this a single gene inheritance or multifactorial disease? 2) Is there a strong genetic or environmental cause to the development of this disease? If both genetic and environmental causes are implicated, you have to indicate each of them separately.arrow_forwardNeural Tube Defects (NTDs) are one of the most severe congenital malformations. A study was conducted to determine whether supplementation with folic acid or a mixture of seven other vitamins (A, D, B1, B2, B6, C, and nicotinamide) around the time of conception could prevent neural tube defects. A total of 1817 women at high risk of having a pregnancy with a neural tube defect (because of a previous affected pregnancy) were allocated at random to one of four groups: 1) folic acid; 2) other vitamins; 3) both; 4) neither. 1195 had a completed pregnancy; 27 of these had a known neural tube defect, 6 in the folic acid groups and 21 in the two other groups. This resulted in a risk ratio= 0.28. Based on the results of the study, which of the following is an appropriate conclusion? a)There is no difference in the effect of folic acid on NTDs b) None of these c) Folic acid increases risk of NTDs d) Folic acid is protective against NTDsarrow_forward
