Chapter 42, Problem 2SYK
Summary Introduction

To explain: The path of a molecule of O2 from its inhalation into the nasal cavity to its delivery to the kidney.

Introduction: Oxygen is a vital molecule for all the living system. Humans breath in the atmospheric oxygen through the lungs and from the lungs, it travels throughout the body through the bloodstream. Oxygen is carried by the blood protein called hemoglobin. The oxygen gets dissolved in the plasma in the lungs and it is transported to the heart that pumps the blood to the rest of the body. Through circulation, oxygen travels through out the body.

The hemoglobin in mammalian blood is usually thought ofsimply as increasing the amount of O2 that can be carried by eachliter of blood. However, in a lecture on hemoglobin, a respiratoryphysiologist made the following statement: “The presence ofhemoglobin in the blood also makes possible the rapid uptakeof O2 by the blood as it flows through the lungs.” Explain thelecturer’s point.
Patients with severe cases of COVID-19 (the disease caused by the coronavirus) may not be able to breathe on their own and so need mechanical ventilation. This condition occurs when the virus attacks the lining of the lungs, resulting in a buildup of fluid and dead cells in the alveoli. Using your knowledge of the anatomy and function of human lungs, explain why this condition makes it difficult for adequate gas exchange to occur.
Explain how CO2 loading and O2 unloading are connected in systemic gas exchange.  Make sure to discuss in terms of the Law of Mass Action.  Also chloride shift.  How does this allow the delivery of oxygen to match the metabolic rate of the tissues?  Why would that be important?
