The pathogenic E.coli are of six different types,enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enteropathogenic (EPEC), uropathogenic (UPEC), enterohemorrhagic (EHEC), enteroaggregative (EAEC), and enteroinvasive (EAEC). These forms of E.coli differ in their pathogenicity islands, virulence factors, and plasmid. All of them except the UPEC cause infection of the gastrointestinal tract.
