Introduction:

Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium that is rod-shaped and belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. There exist two species of Salmonella, Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori. They have a cell diameter of 0.7 to 1.5µm (micrometers) and the length varies from 2 to 5µm. They are non-spore forming species. S.enterica species are found in warm-blooded animals while S.bongori are seen in cold-blooded animals and reptiles.
