Chapter 20.2, Problem 3CC
A scientist monitoring the activity of osmoreceptors notices that infusion of hyperosmotic saline (NaCl) causes increased firing of the osmoreceptors. Infusion of hyperosmotic urea (a penetrating solute) [p. 127] had no effect on the firing rate. If osmoreceptors fire only when cell volume decreases, explain why hyperosmotic urea did not affect them.

Every cell in the body requires oxygen for respiration so that sufficient energy can be produced. Carbon dioxide a waste product in the process, is also produced and needs to be removed from the cells. Therefore, the levels of both gases should be regulated. How does this physiological mechanism explain the changes observed and noted in the increase of pulse rate during running?
Under what circumstances could ions flow through anion channel from a region of lower ion concentration toa region of higher ion concentration?
What two mechanisms are triggered by an increase in theosmolality of the extracellular fluid?
