Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 37P

  14.7ms and 11.025m

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Initial velocity of the ball as it is thrown =vi

Time taken by ball to travel in air =t=3s

Acceleration experienced by ball = acceleration due to gravity =a=9.8ms2

Initial position of ball when it was thrown =yi=y

Final position of ball when it is caught at same height =yf=y

Final velocity of the ball at the maximum height =vf=0ms

Height gained by the ball =h

Final position of ball at maximum height =yfmax=h

Formula Used:

Kinematics equation that relates initial position, final position, initial velocity, acceleration and time of an object is given as

  yf=yi+vit+(0.5)at2

Kinematics equation that relates initial position, final position, initial velocity, acceleration and final velocity of an object is given as

  vf2=vi2+2a(yfyi)

Where,

  vi= Initial velocity

  vf= Final velocity

  a= Acceleration

  yf= Final position

  yi= Initial position

  t= Time

Calculation:

Consider the motion of the ball in air.

Substituting the values

  y=y+vi(3)+(0.5)(9.8)(3)2yy=vi(3)44.1vi(3)=44.1vi=14.7ms

Consider the motion of the ball from launching point to the maximum height.

Use the kinematics equation

  vf2=vi2+2a(yfmaxyi)

Substituting the values

  02=14.72+2(9.8)(h0)h=11.025m

Conclusion:

Therefore, initial speed and height gained comes out to be 14.7ms and 11.025m
