Among the solvents given in Problem 2.55, the one in which
Concept introduction:
Ionic compounds dissolve in polar solvents. The polar solvent is of two types: protic and aprotic. The protic solvent is the compound containing at least one hydrogen atom bonded to the electronegative atom – oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine – and capable of forming a hydrogen bond. The aprotic solvent is the compound which cannot form a hydrogen bond due to lack of a hydrogen atom bonded to the electronegative atom – oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine. The protic solvent can solvate both cations and anions but an aprotic solvent can solvate only cations but not anions.

- You will not find “hydroxide” in the stockroom, but you will find sodium hydroxide (NaOH) andpotassium hydroxide (KOH). Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is expensive and used in spacecraft airfilters since hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide, and lithium is lighter than sodium or potassium.Cesium and francium hydroxides are very expensive and little used. Is this information consistentwith your answer to the previous question?arrow_forwardSolve and explain the following process.arrow_forward(A) if both sentences are true,(B) if both sentences are false,(C) if the first sentence is true but the second is false, and(D) if the first sentence is false but the second is true. 1. Phenolphthalein is a weak acid that is naturally pink. Rheology is the science that deals with the flow of fluids and the deformation of solids. 2. In the experiment on the rusting of metals, the ferricyanide’s blue coloration is an indication that no chemical reaction occurred after its use. Prussian blue is the color produced by the reaction of ferricyanide with the phenolphthalein. 3. When steel is continuously and consistently exposed to air, oxygen, and water, aluminum oxides will be formed on its surface. In the Philippines’ old coins, the metal commonly found in all of the coin denominations is nickel. 4. Galvanized steel is steel coated with tin. A polymer is a type of metal. 5. Corrosion is the same as rusting, and these terms may be used to refer to the wearing away of all metals by the…arrow_forward

Assume that A and B have similar polarities.arrow_forward22. The terms saturated and unsaturated are commonly used when discussing dietary fats. For example, butter is a saturated fat and olive oil is an unsaturated fat. Describe the meaning of these terms from a molecular/structural stand point. Then, discuss how these differences in structure affect the properties of these molecules. A picture may assist you in your description. (3A)arrow_forwardConsider these compounds: A. Ag2CO3 B. - I have multiple questions Mixing SbCl3 and GaCl3 in a 1:1 molar ratio (using liquid sulfur dioxide as solvent) gives a solid ionic compound of empirical formu la GaSbCls. A controversy arises over whether this compou nd is (SbCl2•)(GaC l4 ) or (GaCl2•)(SbC l4"). Predict the molecular structure of the two It is learned that the cation in the compounds has a bent Basic on this fact, which formulation is more likely to be correct?==================================== Mult iply charged ions have received growing attention by the scientific community due to their interesting physical properties and their observation in many fields such as plasma chemistry, surface science, but also in interstellar chemistry, where we can find some molecules not readily observe otherwise. In this problem we will use Molecular Orbital theory to predict the stability of molecules. - 6. It is also known that "like dissolves like". Polar molecules tend to hang out with polar molecules, while nonpolar molecules hang out with nonpolar molecules. Water is known to be a quite polar molecule. So, what can you conclude about the polarity of the blue dye as compared to the polarity of the yellow dye?arrow_forwardSulfur compounds are converted to H2SO4 while NO, compounds are converted to HNO3, and NH3 reacts with these acids to form ammonium salts.
