Concept introduction:

A straight line represents a bond that is in the plane of the paper. A wedge signifies a bond, which points toward you and comes out of the plane of the paper. A dash signifies a bond which points away from you and goes behind the plane of the paper. A 180° rotation inverts wedges to dashes and dashes to wedges. A 180° rotation about the vertical axis flips bonds on the right to bonds on the left whereas a 180° rotation about the horizontal axis flips bonds from top to bottom.
