Concept introduction:
Compounds with strong intermolecular forces have higher boiling points. The dominant intermolecular interaction between polar molecules is called dipole-dipole interactions. Dipole-dipole interactions arise because the positive end of one molecule’s net dipole is attracted to the negative end of another’s. All other factors being equal, the strength of dipole-dipole interactions increases as the dipole moment increases.
