Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Human MZ and DZ are the twin pairs of the same sex reared together are studied and the following concordance values are identified for various traits. Depending on the values shown in the table, explain the relative importance of genes versus the influence of environmental factors for each trait.

Trait Concordance
MZ DZ
Blood type 100 65
Chicken pox 89 87
Manic depression 67 13
Schizophrenia 72 12
Diabetes 62 15
Cleft lip 51 6
Club foot 40 4

Introduction:

Monozygotic twins (MZ) are the ones who prepared from one zygote, which splits and forms two embryos. In dizygotic twins (DZ), each twin develops from each egg is fertilized by a dissimilar sperm and a separate egg. To estimate the influence of genes on phenotypic variation, the study of identical twins reared together can be carried out. In such studies, concordance is measured. Concordance is the percentage of twin pairs in which both members of the pair have the same phenotype for a trait. Concordance frequency gives a general picture of the overall influence of genes on phenotypes.

In the following table, average differences of height, weight, and fingerprint ridge count between monozygotic twins (rearedtogether and apart), dizygotic twins, and nontwin siblings arecompared:   Based on the data in this table, which of these quantitative traitshas the highest heritability values?
Two loci contribute to eyelash length in angora rabbits (locus A  and B).   Assuming additive genetic variance and disregarding environmental effects, you determine that the following alleles contribute the following values to the total expression of lash length (in cm)   A = 2.3, a=1.5, B=2.4, b=1.7 What would the phenotype of a rabbit with a genotype of AABb be? _________cm
Which of the following statements about complex traits is/are TRUE?       Twin studies help to tease apart the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to phenotypic variations.     When describing quantitative traits, a high variance indicates that most individual values are not very close to the mean.     Genetic factors determine Mendelian traits, while environmental factors determine complex traits.     Both additive and dominant effect falls in the category of narrow sense heritability and can be directly passed on from parents to offspring.
