Glucose is the main product of catabolism in carbohydrate metabolism. Glucose and other carbohydrates are broken down through a series of sugar derivatives. Glucose molecules are easy to catabolize and provide a large amount of energy. In bacteria and Archaea, glucose can be catabolized to pyruvate by three different routes.
