Functional groups are collections of atoms that attach to a carbon chain and bring about characteristic chemical and physical properties to that compound. Even if the other parts of the compound are different certain functional groups tend to show similar properties.
cis-trans isomerism is also known as geometric isomerism, is used for di-substituted double bonds. Cis isomers have the two substitutes on the same side and trans isomers have the substituents on opposite sides of the double bonds.
