Chapter 11.5, Problem 1CSC
Summary Introduction
To explain: The way in which other traits are significantly influenced by the environment and by the alleles of other genes that are individual inherits like for example Marfan disease.
Introduction: The environment has a role in the occurrence of various diseases, which includes various factors such as polluted water, air, metal toxicity, poor health and hygiene, and effect of ultra-violet and infra-red radiations on the human body. The diseases like cancer are also caused due to the effect of chemicals, radiations, and due to infection caused by virus and bacteria.

Which of the following best explains how individuals who inherit phenylketonuria alleles can avoid the symptoms of this disease (mental impairment, foul smelling urine)?
It exhibits variable expressivity.
The expression of this disease depends on the environment. If the individual removes phenylalanine from their diet they can avoid the disease entirely.
PKU alleles are epistatic to alleles of another gene, which acts downstream in phenylalanine metabolism.
These individuals supplement their diets with enzymes that break-down phenylalanine.
In rabbits fur colour can be either gray black or blotchy. Blotchy is present as grey and black spots present in no specific pattern males are almost always are the grey or black while females can be gray, black or blotchy. However, a male individual is found that shows the blotchy pattern, and you, expect a nondisjunction event might to be to blame. Explain the inheritance of coat colour in rabbits and also provide an explanation for the blotchy male.
Below in Figure 1 is a pedigree for a family afflicted by a genetic disorder. In some populations, Cystic fibrosis has an incidence of 1 in 2500 newborns. The carrier frequency calculated from this is 1/25. Analyze the pedigree below assuming the disease is similar to cystic fibrosis in incidence and carrier frequency. However this disease may not have the same type of genetic transmission as cystic fibrosis.
What type of genetic transmission is most consistent with the pedigree?
Label all the individuals that you can determine, with hypothesized genotypes.
Label the individuals that have unknown genotypes with possible genotypes.
Assuming her father is known to NOT be a carrier, calculate the probability that IV1 is a carrier for disease.
Use the Χ2 test to determine whether your proposed transmission fits this data.

- In man, muscular dystrophy is a condition in which the muscles waste away during early life and may result in a shorter life expectancy. It is due to a sex-linked, recessive gene. A certain couple has five children – three boys (ages 1yr, 3yrs, and 10yrs old) and two girls (ages 5yrs and 7yrs old). The oldest boy shows the symptoms of this disease. - Familial retinoblastoma, a rare autosomal dominant defect, arose in a large family that had no prior history of the disease. Consider the following pedigree (the darkly colored symbols represent affected individuals): a. Circle the individual(s) in which the mutation most likely occurred. b. Is the person who is the source of the mutation affected by retinoblastoma? Justify your answer. c. Assuming that the mutant allele is fully penetrant, what is the chance that an affected individual will have an affected child?arrow_forwardAlzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder resulting in dementia and memory loss that occurs in 10% of the US population older than 65. In the 1990s, several researchers showed evidence that the allele of a cholesterol precursor gene, APO E4, increased risk of developing the disorder compared to APO E2 or APO E3. This was especially pronounced if patients carried two alleles of APO E4. However, not all people with APO E4 develop the disorder and some without it will present with Alzheimer's nevertheless. This suggests other genes influence development of the disease. Current research has elucidated dozens of genes that interact with APO E4 pathways in hundreds of ways. As many as 27 of the interactions are epistatic, with some as dominant epistasis and some as recessive epistasis. In addition, some of the gene candidates for non-APO E4 Alzheimer’s have other relationships such as dominant, codominant or incomplete dominant. No reliable cure currently exists for Alzheimer’s…arrow_forwardAlzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder resulting in dementia and memory loss that occurs in 10% of the US population older than 65. - Marfan syndrome is a disease caused by a rare dominant allele of the fibrillin-1 gene. Fibrillin-1 is an important component of the extracellular matrix, and people with the disease-causing allele have abnormal connective tissue. An affected mother (Marta) and an unaffected father (Joe) have one unaffected daughter (Luisa - she does not exhibit any traits of the syndrome). - Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It is caused by a recessive allele that encodes a defective chloride channel. Genetic screening has determined that two parents are carriers (heterozygous). What is the probability that they have a child with CF? Rabbits with the genotype CC° are black, heterozygous rabbits CCW appear brown, and rabbits that are CWC" have white fur. VWhat is the phenotypic and genotypic ratio of the offspring of a cross between a brown and a white rabbit? Using your book, determine the probability of each blood type in the offspring of a heterozygous man who has type B blood, and a heterozygous woman who has type A blood. A woman who is type O gives birth to a baby who is also type 0. In a paternity case, a man claims that he cannot be the father because he has type A blood. Is he right? Explain.arrow_forwardThe allele of the gene responsible for the lung disorder, cystic fibrosis rose to prominence in Europe in the 1800s. Cystic fibrosis disease results from thick mucus accumulating in the lungs, which occurs in individuals who are homozygous for the CF allele. A pleiotropic effect is that heterozygous individuals are less likely to suffer from diarrhea. During the European cholera epidemics of the 1800s, resistance against diarrhea conferred a survival advantage such that approximately one in every 400 people in some European populations have cystic fibrosis. Fill in the table below with the genotype and allele frequencies for this 1 in 400 occurrence and provide the Hardy-Weinberg principle model you will be using. (Assume that individuals with the cystic fibrosis trait (CF) reproduce normally and that good sanitation means that there is currently no fitness advantage to diarrhea resistance.) phenotype CF DR normal (totals) Genotype cc Cc CC Number of Individuals 1 ______…arrow_forwardIn mice, the A allele causes agouti fur, the AY allele causes yellow fur and is dominant to the A allele. The homozygous AY AY genotype is lethal. Why is the AYAY homozygous condition lethal? The AY allele highly transcribes the merc gene which is lethal in a homozygous AYAY individual. None of the other answers are correct. The AY allele lacks an upstream merc gene which is required for normal embryonic development. The AY allele contains a null mutation in the A gene, which is required for normal embryonic development. The yellow pigment produced by A allele is required for survival.arrow_forward
