Question
Chapter 9, Problem 34AP
Summary Introduction
Interpretation: The sequence for the treatment of the patients for the minimization of the weighted value of the mean flow time is to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Shortest processing time rule is used for the minimization of mean time flow of the project and hence it is used to minimize the time of mean flow of a process.
Tardiness is used to calculate the difference between the actual completion time and the required due date of the job. Any tardy jobs get completed after the due date of the job.

The operation Management Computer Lab at the PUPR has two student software statistical package
assignment assistant. The students form a single line to wait for help from the computer laboratory assistant.
The students are helped first come, first served. On the average students arrive for help, following a triangular
distribution (x1 5, y1 0).(x2 15, y2 ?) minutes. Each computer laboratory assistant, on the average can
help 1 student per 15 minute (add all the numbers in your student ID) minutes and the service rate follow an
exponential distribution. Determine Y2 or h.

Consider a workstation that has one maintenance mechanic to repair failed machines. We can think of the mechanic as the processor (scarce resource) and the machines awaiting repair as the jobs. Let us assume that
six machines are down, with estimated repair times given here, and that no new machines fail.

state whether or not each situation would be considered “compensable time” (and why or why not).
An employee of a fast food chain has to arrive at work 15 minutes early to change into the“mascot” costume and it typically takes another 15 minutes at the end of the shift to change outof the costume and properly store it. Due to the cost of the costume, employees are notallowed to take the costume home. The “mascots” typically work from 10am – 2pm, to coverthe lunch rush periods. How much time would be “compensable” for the mascots, assumingthe conditions/schedule listed above?2) George is a Radiology Technician at a local hospital and when on call, is required to be nofurther than 30 minutes away from the facility. Is the “on call” time, compensable?

- Read the case study carefully and answer the questions at the end. Mr. Ahmed, manager of the Bara Gali Hotel, is considering how to restructure the front desk to reach an optimum level of staff efficiency and guest service. At present, the hotel has five clerks on duty, each with a separate waiting line, during peak check-in time of 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Observation of arrivals during this period shows that an average of 90 guests arrive each hour (although there is no upward limit on the number that could arrive at any given time). It takes an average of 3 minutes for the front-desk clerk to register each guest. Mr. Ahmed is considering three plans for improving guest service by reducing the length of time that guests spend waiting in line. • The first proposal would designate one employee as a quick-service clerk for guests registering under corporate accounts, a market segment that fills about 30% of all occupied rooms.
