Chapter 8.6, Problem 35P
Summary Introduction

Interpretation:Explain ‘push’ and ‘pull’ and their relationship with just-in-time in reference to lean systems.

Concept Introduction:There are two different approaches to material flow in a manufacturing organization:

  • One is that everything is planned as per the final order and the entire operation, now, gets pulled on the basis of this final result. Theoretically, the output goes straight to the customer. This is called ‘pull’
  • The other is that as per the plant capacity, material and outputs are planned and pushed forward into the system till the finished goods inventory from where the customer is serviced. This is called ‘push’.
