Summary Introduction

To determine:

In lakes, cellular respiration is used by microorganisms to produce energy. The raw sewage is dumped into the river and lakes, which causes mass fish kills, even when that sewage is not toxic for fishes. Explain the reason behind the fish death.

Introduction:

Bacteria and other cells acquire energy in many ways; one of them is cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is of two types, aerobic cellular respiration, and anaerobic cellular respiration. Cellular respiration requires nitrate oxygen and sulfate to break down the nutrients to obtain energy.

BOD (Biological oxygen demand) refers to the amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic organisms to break down organic material present in the water.
