Question
Chapter 27.1, Problem 2TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The bacteriostatic or bactericidal nature of a drug based on a test performed on the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) series.
Introduction:
Minimum inhibitory concentration is the lowest concentration of a drug that prevents visible growth of the bacteria. A bacteriostatic agent is a biological agent that inhibits the growth of the bacteria whereas a bactericidal agent is the one that kills the microscopic organisms. The broth is a liquid medium for the culture of bacteria that contains essential nutrients for the bacterial growth.

Explain how to perform a catalase test and what a positive result looks like
Can the results of an MIC test be used to determine whether an antibiotic is bactericidal or bacteriostatic? If not, set up an experimental procedure to determine whether the effect is bactericidal or bacteriostatic.
A culture of Staphylococcus is diluted as follows:(1) 20mL are added to 80mL of water.(2) 10uL from (1) are then added to 9.99mL of water.(3) A 10-2 dilution is made from tube # (2).(4) 100uL from (3) are plated for a pour plate and incubated.
There were 34 colonies counted on one quarter of the plate following incubation.
a) What was the overall dilution?b) How many cfu/mL were present in the original culture?
