Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

A solute can be defined as a substance which can be dissolved in solvent to produce a solution.

Solute particles when added to the solvent affect the physical properties of the solvent. In the given situation, salt act as a solute and ice acts as a solvent together give a saltwater solution. By adding salt to ice it lowers the freezing point of the ice and the ice melts. To refreeze, the temperature of the solvent must decrease to freeze the solution.

Conclusion:

Hence, the salt as a solute decreases the freezing point of the solvent ice and the crystalline structure is disturbed.
