Question
Chapter 21, Problem 11STP
To determine
The reason behind mixing of salt with ice in ice cream maker is to be explained.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
On adding solute to a solvent, its freezing point is reduced. So, salt in ice decreases the freezing point of water and it is not melted on its normal freezing point.
Conclusion:
Salt is mixed with ice in an ice cream maker because salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes. Salty water is colder than normal water.
