Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The molecular formula for the given alkane is to be given and it is to be represented by a condensed formula.
Concept Introduction:
In bond line formulas, labels for individual carbon atoms are omitted, and hydrogen atoms attached to carbon atoms are shown only when necessary.
A molecular formula is determined from a bond line formula by counting the number of carbon atoms in it. The general molecular formula for alkanes is
In a condensed formula, the bonds between atoms are omitted. Two methyl groups at either end are written. The total number of methylene carbon atoms between the two terminal methyl groups is written as a subscript in the parentheses.

- Fatty acids are molecules with a carboxylic acid on one end and long hydrocarbon chain on the other. The sodium salts of fatty acids (such as sodium strearate, shown below) are commonly used in soaps to trap nonpolar dirt and grease particles. Soap does not work well in "hard water, which is water with high concentration of magensium and calcium ions (often found in water obtained from wells) Explain this observation at a molecular level.arrow_forwardwhat is the term used to describe organic reactions in which each atom of a diatomic molecule is transferred to one of the carbons in a double bond?arrow_forwardDraw Lewis structures and condensed structural formulas for the two alcohols with the molecular formula C3H8O. - Among the four alkanes, ethane, propane, butane, and pentane, which is capable of existing in isomeric forms?arrow_forwardDraw Lewis structures and condensed structural formulas for the four alcohols with the molecular formula C4H10O. Classify each alcohol as primary, secondary, or tertiary. (Hint: First consider the connectivity of the four carbon atoms; they can be bonded either four in a chain or three in a chain with the fourth carbon as a branch on the middle carbon. Then consider the points at which the iOH group can be bonded to each carbon chain.)arrow_forwardGive examples of two different functional groups AND what property they give to the molecule they are found on.arrow_forward
- Use the following information to answer the question A student added bromine solution to a hydrocarbon sample that contained an isomer of C6H12 (E) in the absence of light. After shaking the sample, the student noticed that the colour of the bromine solution changed from orange to colourless. 6. An interpretation that could be made from the student's observations is that the hydrocarbon sample is and the IUPAC name of the sample could be ii. Filling in all single bonds and adding the appropriate unshared pairs gives ______________________________ The functional group of this structure contains ____ electrons. Therefore, unshared pairs are removed from the nitrogen atom and one of the oxygen atoms; a double bond is added giving ______________________________ which has the correct number of electrons. In this structure the nitrogen atom is sharing ____ pairs of electrons. From each shared pair the nitrogen owns ____ electron for a total of ____. Nitrogen is a Group ____ element and would have outer shell electrons in the unbonded, neutral state. Since the nitrogen atom in nitrobenzene has one fewer electron than it would in the neutral state, it has a formal charge of +1 . This is added to the Lewis structure as + giving Since an electron is negatively charged, a shortage of one electron results in a single positive charge on an atom. Conversely, an excess of one electron results in a single negative charge on an atom. When an atom in a Lewis structure “owns” two fewer electrons than it would have in the neutral, unbonded state, it is denoted by ++ or +2 and, conversely, or – 2.arrow_forward
