Concept explainers
Introduction :
The life cycle of mushroom has three stages- spores falling, hyphae developing, and finally mycelium forming. The creation and release of spores are done by the gills located under the mushroom cap. These spores are either single cell male or female attached together to form hyphae. Once one spore's hyphae meet another spore's hyphae they meet and combine to be the mechanism of mycelium growth.
Answer to Problem 2STP
Correct answer :
The correct answer is option (C) The hyphae grow and extend rapidly to form the mushroom.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation/justification for the correct answer :
Option (C) The hyphae grow and extend rapidly to form the mushroom. Once one spore's hyphae meets another spore's hyphae, they meet and combine to be the mechanism of mycelium development and this results in rapid mushroom growth. So, the correct answer is option (c).
Explanation for incorrect answer :
Option (A) the cap pulls in organic matter from the soils to fill the mushrooms. In this part of mushroom life cycle, the caps are used for the absorption of organic matter as nutrients for the growth of mushrooms. So, this is an incorrect option.
Option (B) The gills in the cap rapidly divide to form the mushroom. The division in the gills in the cap takes place for the development of mushrooms. So, this is an incorrect answer.
Option (D) The basidia grow and lengthen the mushroom. The basidia is involved in the bearing of sexual reproductive part called spores. So, this is an incorrect answer.
