Rhizoid is a root like structure in fungi and some plants that acts as support and aids the absorption of nutrients. They are the produces from the hyphae that anchor the fungus. Rhizoids provide extra surface area for absorption of the digested material. Stolon is a shoot that grows along the ground and produces roots at its nodes. Stolons are horizontal hyphae that connect groups of hyphae to each other. They grow faster.
Thus, the rhizoids are grown vertically and stolons are grown horizontally to the ground.
