Some people are concerned about the possible health consequences of eating acrylamide, a by-product of frying potatoes with a high content of the amino acid asparagine. The U.S. FDA recently approved for human consumption GM potatoes that make less asparagine than normal potatoes. These potatoes express RNA interference (RNAi) transgenes that lower the amounts of two different enzymes in the asparagine synthesis pathway, called StAs1 and StAs2.

half-life, but the tryptophan synthase half-life is much longer. To investigate how changes to the stability of the enzyme or its
mRNA affect enzyme activity, two strains of E. coli were engineered. Strain A stabilizes the trp mRNA and strain B rapidly
degrades tryptophan synthase. The wild-type, A, and B strains were grown in a medium with glucose as the sole carbon source.
After several generations, tryptophan was added to all three cultures and tryptophan synthase activity was measured periodically.

For example, from 2% to 5% of the people who have cystic fibrosis possess a mutation that causes a premature stop codon in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR).
